Are we still doing business in Lafayette the way we have always done it? Or are we challenging ourselves to think differently, to feel differently and to take a different approach to our future success?
When I was in school, I studied history. In fact, I have a degree in it. What does history teach us? It teaches us, one, that those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it, and two, no matter what the history dictates, it gets absolutely no vote in the future, it is just History – learn it once and it never changes.
So, why, do we allow our own history and knowledge to dictate our current path? Just because that is what we have always done, doesn’t necessarily make it a good idea. In fact, “what we’ve always done” is a great path to being obsolete. There are many Lafayette companies and industries that no longer exist because of the path of “what we have always done.
Challenge yourself. Challenge yourself to be better than you were yesterday, last week or last year. Challenge yourself to become the best at your craft, solid in both the art and the science of our selling. Challenge yourself to be a resource to your clients and your prospects. Constantly be looking for ways to improve yourself.
If you find you are good at dealing with agencies and struggle with direct business, challenge yourself to call on more direct business and get better at having those conversations. If you find you are strong working with one product but weak with another, challenge yourself to become an expert where you are currently weak.
Draw a parallel for yourself from your own area of strength to your area of weakness. Take what you know and apply it to the area where you are less knowledgeable.
We talk about becoming an expert in our business and our customer’s business, however, we need to make that a reality. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Again, challenge yourself to be better and challenge yourself to be better, every day. Dedicate yourself to the practice of life-long learning, and success will follow.
Commit to doing what you have always done and someone will pass you along the way.
