In the age of Amazon, it’s harder for Lafayette businesses to compete. It becomes especially difficult when we focus solely on price and not what set you apart from everyone else What do you sell? What sets you apart from your competitor? What unique value will motivate your customers to pay a little more because of something you bring to the table that no one else does? Really – what are you famous for – and why?
Analyze your business. What are you famous for – what is that one thing that everyone in greater Lafayette knows you do well? Often times it is not what we think. Many of us relay on our inner circle to advise us and offer insights about our business. And many of them are unqualified to give us honest feedback about why we are known. We may have one idea and when we hold the mirror up to our inner circle all we get back is positive affirmation. And in the age of social media, this has only gotten worse. We live in our own bubble.
Be honest in evaluating your business situation. Understand where you sit in the pecking order of your particular Lafayette business category. We all have competitors – are you at the top of the list? The middle? Or the bottom? Once you establish a baseline of operation it will be easier to take a position and create a position for you in the marketplace. Second, evaluate what you do well – take honest customer feedback. Ask and reward your customers for providing it. Don’t just listen to the good ones, listen to the critical ones as well.
Lastly, when you’ve carved out your place in the market – create an advertising strategy that communicates what you are famous for and why. Use this as the base of operation for every message you send out into the Lafayette market. Answer the phone with it. Put it on your website header, put it in all of your commercial messages for Lafayette consumers to hear.
